710 Women Convened in Penang, Malaysia”
The 13th Assembly of the Asian Baptist Union was the first big international gathering of Baptists that was held in Penang, Malaysia. It was hosted by the Malaysia Baptist Ladies’ Union at the newly-construct-ed Georgetown Baptist Church on August 29 - September 1, 2018. 710 registered women from around the world. 29 member bodies of ABWU out of 33 were represented from 16 out of 18 member countries. Pakistan, China, one member body each from Bangladesh and Vietnam were not represented at this Assembly. Speakers, Workshop Leaders, and delegates outside the ABWU region came from Croatia in Europe, U.S and Canada in North America, South Africa, Australia in the Southwest Pacific, and Latin America. The theme, based on Ephesians 2:10 was, “Created, Transformed and Empowered to Reach Out.” Dr. Ksenija Magda, BWA WD President was the main speaker.
24 workshops conducted in English and three in Chinese were offered and each delegate could choose three to attend.
The 13th ABWU Assembly was also the 60th Anniversary of ABWU. It was celebrated with the traditional cutting of cake.
Past and current officers, not just the presidents were presented shawls as token of appreciation for their role in taking the organization this far. Recognized as “Mother of ABWU” and the 8 th ABWU President Chang Young Shim gave her reflection and challenge.
Baptist Church of Bhutan Women was accepted into ABWU membership during the business meeting. Also the Constitution and By Laws was amended. Rev. Sook Jae Lee, the chairperson for the Officers Search Committed introduced the new officers who will serve for the next five years, from 2018 to 2023.
