On 16 December 2017, the provinces of Eastern and Northern Samar were struck by the Typhoon Kai-tak, triggering severe floods and landslides. Over 249,000 people were affected with their homes, rice-fields, farmlands, and other means of livelihood were destroyed. A total of 45 lives were lost in the carnage. On 22 December, Southern Philippines and Palawan Islands were again hit by Typhoon Tembin, causing massive destruction of homes and farmlands. As per the official report of the Government of Philippines dated 1 January 2018, 170 lives were lost and 794,613 people affected. A total of 17,318 families were sheltered in the temporary shelters.
