Meet Roshan Mendis

Having his foundations in faith through the ministry of Youth for Christ, Roshan answered the call of God as a young man of twenty, deciding to serve in rural villages rather than continue in the line of family business in the hospitality industry. So, he joined as a staff member in rural mission of Campus Crusade for Christ, Sri Lanka. Since then he has served within the Church and in Christian Organizations; in teaching and in administrative roles; in both pioneering and pastoral contexts...

Diversities, Smiles & Golden Pagodas

It you have traveled across Asia in recent years, you will notice that Asia has growing rapidly. Many cities are crammed, congestion of vehicles have become the new order, thousands of people crowd the streets like an endless stream of water flowing through a narrow canal. According to World Population Data sheet, the population of the world as of 2019 is 7.7 billion people. Of which Asia has grown to 4.6 billion people with an increase in the past 10 years from 4.1 billion in 2010. Asia is...

Thank You Kabi And Feraz

The ministry of Asia Pacific Baptist Aid began in January 2005 as the Asia Pacific Baptist Federation responded to the devastation of the Asian Tsunami. This humanitarian disaster, caused by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami off the coast of Aceh, impacted significantly Indonesia, Thailand, India and Sri Lanka. When it occurred APBF did have an Aid and Relief Committee but no staff. Given the level of need and the help offered by other members of the APBF family and the wider global family i...

MISSION: EX DEUS & ET EX HUMANUS

Christian Mission is ex Deus (from God) as well as ex Humanus (from human being). It is from God, of God, and for God. Yet human intellect, which is a gift from God, is a necessity in making it happen. However, human intellect is not free from presuppositions, perspective, prejudices, cultural biases, fear, ignorance, pride, fear, the desire of freedom from any accountability and various human limitations. Therefore, it is possible that with all good intention a Christian mission may enta...

Christmas - A Love Story

Last year, in the first week of December when I returned to my base at Hyderabad in India, I was pleasantly surprised to hear Christmas instrumentals music and carols being played in the airport. It was a very good feeling. During this season, everywhere we go, be it a shopping center or hotel, we are bound to hear beautiful Christmas music. Across the globe, in many cities, I find that right from the month of November itself the commercial centers, streets and hotels are decorated with Chr...

The 17th APBY Conference - Conference Reflection

After more than a year of prayers and preparations, Asia Pacific Baptist Youth Conference 2019 has ended. The Lord has allowed me to witness Him at work in so many ways during the conference that I find it difficult to put it in words. I have considered giving up writing about it, then I read Psalm 77:12-14. “I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds. Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God? You are the God who performs miracles; you display your po...

Gospel-Driven Mission To Make Disciples

The 17th APBY Conference is themed Making and Multiplying Disciples to champion the call of Jesus for every believer to be a disciplemaker in the context of the local church—wherever God leads and calls. MD2 is rooted in 2 Timothy 2:2, “And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” (ESV).  The plenary sessions were centered on the gospel of Jesus as the bedrock on how we can make and multiply disci...

How Do We Respond to Global Instability and All It Is Creating?

There is a Jewish proverb that I have loved for many, many years. I have seen it tattooed on backs and arms, painted as graffiti, written on inspirational posters. However, when I stop and think about this proverb it is an extraordinary ask. To speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, to defend the rights of those who are destitute. Many associate this proverb with those living in poverty. The World Bank says 735 million people are living in poverty and that figure is only those who l...

My Journey With APBF

It all started in the year 2012 when I was asked to be part of the APBF Congress worship team. I had just begun my ministry then as a Music Minister at Shillong Baptist Church. It was a great opportunity for me to get some ministry exposure, or so I thought. Little did I know that this was the beginning of a journey that would change my life in so many good ways.  Different musicians from across Asia Pacific came together to form the Congress worship band. The band became family and grew bi...

Where to Begin?

This was my first APBY Conference and I leave blessed!  Truth be told, I had never heard of APBY or APBF until Pastor Vee reached out to me last Fall asking if I could participate and lead a workshop on “Writing God-centered Songs”. In the US, outside our many Baptist conventions and associations, we don’t really talk about Baptists internationally. So to be a part of this conference was an eye-opening experience. Getting to see all the various nations and cultures in the Asia Pacific...

What A Blessed Time It Was!

All together 715 delegates, 30 workshops and plenary sessions speakers, 17 countries represented from the Asia Pacific, came together at Philippine Baptist Theological Seminary, Baguio City, Philippines to worship, fellowship and be challenged through the theme: Making and Multiplying Disciples taken from 2 Timothy 2: 2. What a blessed time it was. The worship band led us into what can be called a ‘powerful praise and worship’ that drew delegates to God’s presence, workshops that were spir...

The Missional Passion of Baptists

Asia is a continent filled with so much cultural diversity that it will take years to learn the cultural uniqueness each tribe represents and celebrate the differences God has bestowed upon Asians. But how exciting it is that there is more of Asia that we can learn and share the gospel of Jesus Christ. There is never a dull moment visiting the different tribes spread across Asia which reminds me of the picture Revelation 7:9 provides when a great multitude from every nation, from all tribes and ...
